The Curriculum
In order to meet the ever-increasing demands placed on performers,
it is vital that students become proficient in the three main disciplines of
Dance, Drama and Singing:
Dance

Term one concentrates on technique and physical fitness. This is very important, as performers need to develop stamina and good technique. Ballet, jazz, street/hip-hop, commercial and musical theatre styles are all taught, enabling students to feel confident within a range of dance situations.

In term two, the emphasis is on students’ ability to quickly pick up and perform routines in a variety of styles. Audition classes with feedback are regularly held, giving students a valuable insight into the range of dance calls they will encounter in the industry.

The final term concentrates on exam preparation and final presentation. The repertoire of previous terms is consolidated, with the emphasis very much on the students’ ability to deliver a highly capable, polished performance. This term also incorporates masterclasses from visiting West End performers.
Drama

The first term is mainly about breaking down barriers and shedding the inhibitions many students understandably have at the start of a course of this nature.

This term includes improvised work, dramatic choral
speaking, and the introduction of texts, with the
emphasis on dealing with the ‘inner-critic’, to develop
the confidence required to impress in a group audition
situation. Students begin to choose audition
monologues, which are worked on in class. This term
also includes a West End masterclass.

In term two, students continue to choose suitable audition pieces, working on a wide variety of texts, from classical to contemporary, in a professional, rehearsal-style environment, being directed, thus ensuring a very practical approach. This term also includes accent classes and workshops on acting for camera.

Term three focuses on exam preparation and preparing for an acting audition. Students are given expert guidance on how best to present their audition pieces, in order to feel fully prepared to go into the industry and achieve the very best results in an audition situation.
Singing

Term one concentrates on establishing effective vocal technique, empowering students with the skills and knowledge necessary to continually develop the voice for a sustained career. Technique is taught throughout the year.

The majority of work in this term is taught in a group situation, working on harmonies and creating an ensemble sound. Students are given an initial assessment to identify their current vocal ability and then begin to choose potential audition pieces, which are worked on in class. Performance classes enable students to regularly receive feedback on their audition technique and enable them to make informed decisions about suitable repertoire.

In term two, each student’s progression is continually
monitored, to ensure tuition meets their individual areas
of development. Students continue to build their
repertoire and are encouraged to hone their skills using
carefully chosen audition pieces. This term includes
close harmony work and music theory classes help
students gain a general understanding of musical
notation, note values, time signatures, keys and sight
singing.

The final term focuses on two main areas: audition and final performance. Students receive individual exam preparation sessions and the audition technique work of previous terms is consolidated, so that every student who graduates from KSA feels fully prepared to forge their path in this most challenging, yet most rewarding of professions.
